Opinion: Candidate response to wave park worry

Frank Petretis, PalmyraMelville Gazette

I HAVE been following commentary on the Melville Community Chat facebook page, in particular the issue of the surf park.

Wave Park Group, the developers behind the project, recently contacted the new candidates running in the City of Melville local election to offer them one-on-one meetings to learn more about the project and ask any questions they may have.

I note that to date seven candidates have taken up the opportunity.

These candidates, whether pro or anti surf park, have at least shown a willingness to engage and to learn more about the project rather than just rely on hearsay and misinformation spread by the anti group.

What is surprising is the number of candidates who have either declined to attend the meeting or not responded at all.

How can these candidates say that they are not biased and best represent ratepayers without having a full understanding of the project? What these candidates have openly displayed is the kind of closed mindedness that they will bring to the council, and not just on the matter of the surf park, but also other community issues of importance.

Good on Wave Park Group for putting themselves out there and holding up their side of the bargain to be transparent and forthcoming in sharing information.
