Remark was stupid

Look at an old UBD street directory and you will see all these roads ringing Perth already planned. Most, such as the Tonkin and Reid, have been built.

However, the Roe extension fell foul of local/Labor politics (as mentioned by Daryl Binning in his letters in the same issue), in the Fremantle area – vote Labor and this won’t be built. Yes traffic has increased, but so has the population bringing with it even more traffic. Refusing to absorb it by not extending the road system will not make it go away.

Fremantle is promoted as a working port. Most of the commercial work located on the north side of the harbour and most sea traffic is containerised.

Most of it moves by road. Updating the rail movement through the centre of Fremantle would also be disruptive to Fremantle. Therefore, the road link is important to the operation and movement of freight out of Fremantle.

The extension of Roe Highway and a bypass of Fremantle was a larger plan for Perth to cope with freight traffic: to axe it was a case of political vandalism.

I don’t know where Mario lives, but his remark about Mayor Aubrey having Roe 8 built outside his residence is stupid in the extreme. Mario should travel the piece of Leach Highway/High Street from Stock Road to Stirling Highway and experience the wall-to-wall heavy trucks passing within metres of homes.

This should all be going on an extension of Stirling Highway/Fremantle Bypass. Some of it planned originally, I believe, to go through a tunnel away from residences.

This whole issue effects Cockburn, Fremantle and Melville. This is not a Nimby (not-in-my-backyard) issue Mario.
