ALAN Rye writes in last week’s edition that because we are not involved in the slaughter of animals we quietly ignore it.

But is it right to ignore it?

Knowing that our fellow animals value their lives just as much as we do, and knowing that they feel terror and pain in exactly the same way as we do, shouldn’t we be treating them with kindness and compassion? How would we like to be treated in the cruel and heartless manner in which we treat them?
