CARALEE Community School teacher Aleisha Cotton was not surprised by the success of the inaugural AFLW season – she has witnessed first hand the kind of passion and talent that exists among female footballers for years.

After arriving at Caralee as an Italian and art teacher five years ago, Ms Cotton soon began coaching netball at weekends and once her enthusiasm for sport was uncovered she was asked to teach that subject also.

Since then she has created one of Perth’s premier primary school football programs for girls and never misses an opportunity to enter her team into carnivals or skills competitions.

“We do a multisport program each year where everyone gets a chance to play all kinds of sports like cricket, netball and AFL and it was during that that I discovered how good some of the girls at our school are at footy,” Ms Cotton said.

“Since then we’ve played in a bunch of carnivals and were named State champions in the Freo Kiwk Kick and Fast Ball skills competitions,”

“We’ve also been lucky enough to play in two curtain raisers for the Dockers and some of our girls were also invited to play Auskick at Fremantle Oval during one of the AFLW games.”

Ms Cotton’s dedication to her girls and the game saw her awarded the Outstanding Female AFL Program gong at the AFL School Ambassador Awards night.

She said she was honoured by the recognition but that coaching was a reward in itself.

“I love different personalities that come out on the footy field,” she said.

“You’ll get a music student who hasn’t really done much sport and then all of a sudden they want to try out and it’s always surprising how competitive they are when they get out there.

“We’ve got a great team and they all mesh and surprise themselves with how well they do.”
