Alfred Cove tennis star set for Thailand trip as part of Junior Fed Cup team

Aaron CorlettMelville Gazette

YOUNG tennis gun Talia Gibson has described being named in the 16 and under Junior Fed Cup team as an amazing opportunity.

The Alfred Cove (14) resident and Brixton Tennis Club member will travel to Thailand for the tournament from April 11, with teammates Annerley Poulous from the ACT and Anastasia Berezov from NSW.

The feat is impressive given she is a year younger than her teammates.

“The feeling is pretty amazing; I’ve never had an opportunity like this before,” she said.

“It’s going to be a different experience. It will be hot and humid; I’ve never played in conditions like that before, so it’s a good learning experience.

“I’ve played against my teammates before and they are really good.

“I’ve been doing lots of training, hydrating and getting rest to prepare for the tournament.”

Among Talia’s achievements is being crowned the 14 and under National Champion at last year’s December Showdown in Melbourne.

Talia first started playing tennis when she was five years old and has consistently excelled at it.

“I’ve always been an active person and I enjoy the social side of the game,” she said.

“I’ve been able to make friends, learn a lot and travel too.

“My ultimate dream is to win a Grand Slam but in the short term I want to play in as many ITFs (International Tennis Federation tournaments) as possible.”
