FIVE students from Applecross Senior High School have been selected to represent WA during a major tennis tournament.

Specialist Tennis Program members Yang Ho Park, 12, Kent Yamazaki, 14, Shanelle Iaconi, 14, Talia Gibson, 14, and Marko Mrdak 12, are among the 13 WA young stars competing in the December Showdown, the national championships for the Asia-Pacific region.

The event will be held at Melbourne Park from December 1 to 16 and also features the Australian Open Wildcard Playoff.

School tennis coordinator Lance Hinds said the students trained four hours per week during school and after school for two hours a week.

“This involves on court training including technique, drills, tactics and match play and also off court including strength and conditioning, fitness testing and some sport science theory,” he said.

“Outside of school, they train other hours with their individual coaches and clubs.

“I think all students will go well at the showdown, in particular the boys and girls 14s teams are a very good chance of winning.

“All three of our students in these teams have nationals experience and more importantly have learnt the value of teamwork through representing the Applecross team at a state level together.

“The boys in the 12s will have an excellent experience and will learn and develop their games at a national level.”
