Cricket: Melville women just miss out on grand final berth

MELVILLE has missed out on a spot in the women’s A-Grade 50-over grand final despite defeating University at Tompkins Park on Sunday.

South Perth will play reigning premiers Midland-Guildford in the decider on Sunday after finishing in the top two spots on the ladder.

The Sky Blues finished on top with 67 points, five ahead of second-placed Midland-Guildford who won their round robin game on Sunday.

Melville was a further five points back in third.

Midland-Guildford confirmed its spot in the decider after defeating Subiaco Floreat by 10 wickets at Lilac Hill on Sunday.

The Swans needed to win with Melville also triumphing in their match on Sunday, thrashing University by 176 runs.

Mathilda Carmichael top scored with 66 and Georgie Ireland contributed 56 not out as Melville made 5-260, with Gemma Cassidy taking two wickets for Uni.

University were bowled out for 84, with Rebecca Angwin taking 3-2 while Meg Thompson and Georgie Middleton took two wickets each.
