Firebirds for World Series

Staff ReporterMelville Gazette

Central Firebirds’ 14 players, chosen on merit from the South Perth, Willetton and Gosnells clubs, won the WA Little League Championships in April, and returned undefeated from the Australian National Championship in Queensland this month.

For the first time ever, Australia will now be one of 16 countries represented at the World Series in Pennsylvania, USA, starting August 15.

Head coach Glen Tovey, of Canning Vale, said that he was on cloud nine.

‘After working for five years on this Little League charter and for eight months with this team, it is such a privilege to see that hard work pay off,’ he said.

Jill Walsh of Canning Vale, mother of Firebirds player Dylan Walsh (12) said the team members’ families would now focus on a string of fundraising projects and events to help send them to the tournament.

‘They’re a great bunch of kids and every one of them has trained so hard,’ she said.

Her elder son, Connor Walsh (14), is at present touring the USA with the Perth Heat Colts team.

Ms Walsh said it had cost the family nearly $30,000 so far this year to allow her boys to attend the necessary qualifying and competition events this year.
