THE anticipated elimination battle between Melville men’s Water Polo WA Premier League teams did not eventuate on Saturday with the Saints winning via forfeit while the women’s Marlins scored another big victory ahead of their finals assault.

As a result of the Sharks’ forfeit, the Saints leapfrog their Melville counterparts into fourth position in the season standings and will play finals for 2015-16.

That sets up a battle for the Saints against the minor premier City Beach Bears on Saturday, March 5.

It is a tough game first up considering the Bears have lost just once this season from their 20 matches and have been a dominant force in the majority of their 19 victories.

The other men’s semi-final will pit the Dolphins against the Phantoms Skulls.

The winner of the two semi-finals will clash in the grand final on Saturday, March 19.

Meanwhile, the Marlins will enter the finals as warm title favourites following an 18-13 victory over the City Beach Bears at Bicton Pool.

The result means that the Marlins finish the season well clear as minor premiers with a 14-2 win-loss record.

The Bears finish second at 8-6 with two draws while the North Coast Phoenix (7-7, two draws) and Triton (5-10, one draw) round out the top four.

The semi-finals will feature the Marlins taking on Triton and the Bears facing the Phoenix.
