MELVILLE City Hockey Club’s Premier men played an exciting 2-2 draw with second-placed Victoria Park-Xavier on Saturday night.
Melville went into the match needing a good result to help spark a climb out of the relegation zone but faced a daunting challenge against a full strength Victoria Park team boasting Australian stars Matthew Dawson and Jake Whetton.
The home side created several early opportunities but failed to capitalise and paid the price when Jason Gabriel scored for Vic Park midway through the first half.
A series of penalty corners to Melville led to two goals to Matt Willis, and a 2-1 lead at the break.
A free flowing second half saw both sides create a number of opportunities before Vic Park scored through Dawson with six minutes left to play.
Melville had two chances to snatch the match in the final minutes but a last minute save on the line from Vic Park meant the score remained deadlocked at the whistle.
After the match Melville coach Russell Lee said his side had failed to capitalise on its strong play.
“Yet again I thought we had the better of the game but we failed to get the win,” he said.
“We need to keep playing this style of hockey and the wins will come.”
