MELVILLE City men overcame dogged opposition from Victoria Park to record consecutive victories for the first time this year, prevailing 4-2 under stormy skies at Morris Buzzacott Reserve last Saturday afternoon.

In what was always going to be a tight contest between two mid-table teams, the stormy weather helped make the first half an even affair before Mark Brodie scrambled in a goal with five minutes to go in the first half to break the deadlock.

That led to a burst of goal scoring, with Justin McDougall scoring two goals in two minutes to make the score 3-0 to Melville at halftime.

Vic Park drew one back 10 minutes after the resumption and Melville missed a series of excellent chances to kill off the contest before Ash Ranford scored an excellent reverse-stick goal to make the game reasonably safe for Melville.

Vic Park scored a consolation goal with five minutes to go leaving the final score line 4-2, flattering the visitors given the chances that Melville missed.

Coach Russell Lee said he was pleased his side had continued to build on its form after last week’s win over Old Aquinians.

“We should probably have scored a few more, and will need to be careful not to squander chances like that as the season moves forward,” he said.
