MELVILLE City Hockey Club’s poor start to the season continued with a 4-1 loss to Hale on Saturday night.

Melville conceded early and then fought back well to level, but the persistent defensive lapses that have dogged the team so far this season allowed Hale to coast to an easy win.

The result means the Melville men have dropped their first four games, with losses to Victoria Park, Xavier and Old Aquinians coming over the past week in what has been a busy start to the year.

Coach Russell Lee cut a frustrated figure after the game.

“We are really doing ourselves no favours out there with the mistakes we are making under little or no pressure,” he said.

“We have a lot of guys out but that is no excuse; the players we have on the field are more than capable of executing the plans that we have, but for some reason we keep making the same simple errors and our opposition is making us pay.

“We have another opportunity on Tuesday night against Wolves before we have a mini-break; but it is down to the experienced players in the group to stand up and lead the young guys.

“Things aren’t desperate at this point but we need to get a win soon to start building confidence around the group.”
