Last-gasp winner gives MUM FC win over nine-man Quinns

Ben SmithMelville Gazette

A LAST-minute winner from Broden Brown sealed a dramatic 1-0 win for Murdoch University Melville (MUM) FC over a nine-man Quinns FC at Gumblossom Park.

In a game which featured two red cards to Quinns players and two missed penalties from MUM FC, including one moments before Brown’s winner, the visitors claimed all three points in the game’s dying embers.

The win moved the visitors four points clear of Quinns and kept them in the hunt for a playoff spot with four games left.

MUM FC enjoyed the majority of play in the first half as the pace of Christian Long and Declan Tanna proved to be a handful for the hosts’s defence.

They were given a chance to take the lead when the referee controversially deemed a Quinns defender handled the ball in the box, but Ryan Tucker’s penalty was saved.

MUM FC continued to probe in the second half, but were unable to properly test the opposition goalkeeper, while up the other end, Alec Radonich was largely untroubled bar one save from a header.

The game shifted further in the away side’s balance when the referee issued two second yellow cards to Quinns players, the first for a trip on Samuel Garces as he attempted to chase down an attacker, and the second for a push on Long as he bore down on goal.

With less than a minute to play, Matt Sljivic was bundled over in the area and the referee pointed to the spot, but Garces’ penalty was tipped over the bar by the ‘keeper.

Fortunately for the visitors, their agony turned to ecstasy moments later, when Brown met the resulting corner and his header flew into the net to complete a drama-filled day.
