A LATE Matt Swann goal secured an historic first finals victory for Melville City, which defeated Old Aquinians 1-0 at Perth Hockey Stadium on Wednesday night.

Nothing could separate the sides in the first hour but Swann broke the deadlock when he put the finishing touch on an incredible team goal in the 69th minute to put his side ahead and set up a preliminary final with UWA on Sunday.

Wesley and South Perth caused a boilover when it routed UWA 5-2 in the earlier semi-final, University having lost just one game up to that point in the season.

Melville City will attempt to send UWA packing in straight sets when the two sides clash at Perth Hockey Stadium at 4pm on Sunday.

Melville finishes the season at Olympic Kingsway, with an opportunity to finish as high as fourth with a win.

The lowest City will finish is seventh, a superb feat given its seven-game winless run early in the season which saw Melville floundering in 11th.

Ryan Russell and Cameron McLaren are both chances to return from injury layoffs.

The future of the club appears bright, with Melville City’s Under 18s just one point away from claiming the title, having lost just once so far this season.
