THREE Melville Roar Little Athletics endurance runners will test their mettle against the nation’s best at the Australian Cross Country Championships in Canberra this weekend.
Tia McArthur and Megan Bell will compete in the Under-11 category while Para-athlete Raynor Keane races as an Under-15.
All three qualified for the championships at the State trials in May and have been training regularly at Piney Lakes Reserve under the watchful eye of coach Ross Keane.
“Tia, Megan and Raynor all competed at nationals last year and are determined to beat their times so we’ve been training twice a week since back in April,” Keane said.
“Here in Perth they’re used to running 2km cross country events but the championships are over 3km so we’ve been running time trials once a week at the increased distance.”
Keane said all three young athletes had shown improvement and that he was confident of a strong showing in the nation’s capital on Saturday.
“Tia and Megan finished first and second at the Little Athletic Cross Country State Championships on the weekend so they’ve got a bit of form behind them,” he said.
“We’ve been working a lot harder in training and run a lot more sand and hills than last year.
“Melville is not really a big cross country club and I don’t think we’ll medal but I will be looking for an improved placing from all three.”
