MELVILLE will have one team in the Water Polo WA Premier League grand finals for 2016, the women’s Marlins advancing while the men’s Saints came up short against the minor premiers.
The Marlins dominated the women’s competition throughout the regular season and won their way into the grand final with a hard fought 8-5 win over the fourth-placed Triton at Bicton Pool.
The Marlins’ season was in serious jeopardy when Triton got off to a flying start scoring the opening three goals.
Melville only just got on the board seconds before quarter-time but by half-time had levelled scores at 3-3.
The Marlins then scored the only two goals of the third quarter and added another three to two in the fourth to end up winning by three.
They will face City Beach in the grand final after the Bears won their semi-final against North Coast Phoenix 18-8.
The grand final takes place on Saturday, March 19 at HBF Stadium.
The Saints ended the season in fourth position but their semi-final opponent City Beach dominated throughout 2015-16 and showed why in a comprehensive 17-10 victory.
It was always going to be a big ask for the Saints considering their opponents won 13 more games during the regular season.
City Beach opened up a 6-2 lead early in the second quarter, led 13-5 by three quarter-time and went on to win by seven goals.
It was still a brave effort by the Saints with Nick McMahon leading the way with three goals.
