MELVILLE race walker Xavier Bernard has set his sights on the national championships after defending his gold medal at the Little Athletics State Track and Field Championships.

Xavier claimed his second consecutive Under 11-Boys 1100 Meter Race Walk ahead of Inglewood’s Jarrod Clark and Bunbury’s Camden Marriot.

Fellow Melville local Aidan Hancy finished fifth.

Xavier (10) said he was ecstatic after taking out the win.

“I put a lot of training into it. It was very rewarding,” he said.

“My dad kept saying: ‘See Xavs, all of that hard work has paid off’.”

The Mel Maria Catholic Primary School student now has his eyes on a strong showing at the National Championships on the Sunshine Coast in August.
