Before making their way to the championships, the duo will compete in Germany.

Hyde-Cooling said the duo had known each other since they were kids and lived only streets away from each other.

“We’ve known each since we were doing Little Athletics under 7s in Brentwood and we struck up a friendship, along with a few other girls,” she said.

“We used to compete together every weekend and this continued as we competed in senior competitions.

“In terms of fundraising for this trip, we were helped out by the UWA Athletics Club, who held a movie fundraiser night for us and the two other WA athletes that are heading over.

Ilievski said the duo had performed well at the 2018 Australian Junior Championships in Sydney, which helped them qualify for the international event.

“We are training six times per week, for hours at a time,” she said.

“I’m feeling a bit nervous but it’s a huge experience.”
