Ben SmithMelville Gazette

MURDOCH University Melville (MUM) FC tasted victory in their final home game of the season, beating Kelmscott Roos 4-1 at Murdoch University.

Despite trailing to an early goal, MUM FC scored two either side of half time to keep their playoff hopes alive heading into the final game of the season.

A win against Swan United in their last game, coupled with a Balga SC loss, would see MUM FC finish fourth and secure a spot in the promotion play-offs.

The visitors struck early after they capitalised on an underhit backpass and swept the ball past Alec Radonich, but Declan Tanna equalised soon after when he headed home Christian Long’s cross.

It did not take long for the hosts to take the lead after Samuel Garces was brought down on the edge of the box and Scott Campbell’s free kick was parried into the path of Adam Mangion, who bundled home from close range.

Kelmscott almost levelled the scores just after half time, but were denied by a fine save from Radonich and his stop proved to even more important minutes later, when Aldaine Van Dyk’s cross was headed home by Long.

The Roos were then presented with a lifeline when they won a penalty after Radonich felled their striker, but the hosts’ custodian continued his fine form, making a good save low to his right.

Up the other end, Kristian Usedo made a superb stop to deny Daniel Davey from close range, before Tanna made the points safe with a superb placed finish.

In other results, MUM FC’s Reserves won 8-0, while the Under 18s prevailed 4-2.
