Murdoch University Melville FC end season on a high note

Ben SmithMelville Gazette

MURDOCH University Melville (MUM) FC have finished their season on a high note, beating Swan United 3-1 at Swan Italian Sporting Club.

Two strikes from Christian Long, either side of a Rion Robertson header, steered the visitors to their second win over third-placed Swan this season.

The victory secured fifth place for MUM FC in State League Division Two, eight points clear of sixth-placed Quinns, but four points off a playoff spot.

While Swan had secured their place in the playoffs, the away side were keen to prove a point and drew first blood when Long beat the offside trap, rounded the goalkeeper and fired home.

Jay Lang came close to equalising when his long range effort flew just wide of the target, before Robertson looped a header over goalkeeper Christopher Gay to double the visitors’ lead.

Dean Thurston forced a good, close-range save from Gay just after half time, before Swan started to work their way back into the game.

Alec Radonich made a great save to deny James Burns’ header, before Gavin Knight shot just wide from a tight angle.

However, Long all but finished off the game when Robertson found space in the box and unselfishly squared for the forward to fire into an open net.

The hosts grabbed a late consolation when Sam Garces was controversially adjudged to have bought down Knight in the box and the striker converted his own penalty, but it proved to be too late to have any effect on the outcome.
