MELVILLE Senior High School coach Sue Gerrard has led the WA State School Girls netball team to its first national championship in 28 years with a 31-24 victory over NSW in the grand final.

Fremantle Netball Association players Ella Eastaugh and Joely Patterson played important roles for the team, which was managed by Lauren McCaig, an A2 division player in the Fremantle competition.

Facing an impressive NSW in the decider, WA came out hard from the first whistle and led at every break, finishing with a seven-goal buffer.
