AFTER more then a decade in the hangar, the Applecross-Mt Pleasant Jets Rugby League Club is preparing for take-off again in 2018.

Established as one of the founding clubs in the West Australian Rugby League competition in 1948, the Jets began shedding players after the Western Reds folded in the late 1990s.

By 2006 the club was down to just one senior side playing reserve-grade rugby, and the Jets were forced to withdraw when the Perth competition was overhauled to require first-grade and junior teams.

Now, president Cody McColl is reviving the club and said there was already strong interest from under-6 level all the way to the senior grades.

“The NRL is considering an expansion back to Perth, so myself and a few other members thought now would be a good time to try and get the club off the ground again,” he said.

“We’ve already got nearly 60 players in the senior grades.

“It’s still a bit early to tell for juniors but with the Western Force getting axed from Super Rugby, we’re expecting a few rugby union players will come over.”

McColl said former Bradford Bulls coach Matt Garland had been recruited to coach the Jets’ Premiership Cup side.
