CHRISTIAN Long scored the loan goal as Melville City claimed its first win in six games with a 1-0 victory over Kelmscott Roos at Frye Park at the weekend.

Despite a performance that will not rank among its finest, City battled hard and survived a late onslaught to secure a much-needed three points.

Kelmscott had the better of the first half and nearly opened the scoring when Owen Curtis flicked a corner just wide.

Melville’s George Festa then had to be alert to turn wide a dangerous cross under heavy pressure, before a goalmouth scramble saw the ball drop just wide as the Roos pressed for the opener.

City started the second half stronger and Long made Kelmscott pay for its earlier wastefulness, running onto a through ball and clinically dispatching the ball beyond Kristian Usedo in goals.

Scott Campbell then fizzed a shot wide from distance, as Melville started to take the upper hand.

However, the hosts remained dangerous and Harry Webster’s snap shot forced a good save from Daniel Agudelo.

Kelmscott then got in behind Melville’s defence twice in a matter of minutes, first being denied by the post before sliding an attempt well wide.

Shane Boyle nearly sealed the points when he found space in the box, only for Usedo to make a superb save before Long’s follow up was blocked from point blank range.

Despite the referee waving away Melville protests when a goal-bound Long was clattered by Usedo in injury time, the visitors hung on and claimed a valuable win.
