Soccer: Melville City felled by late Kelmscott strike

Ben SmithMelville Gazette

In a game low on goal-scoring chances, Curtis’s acrobatic late strike denied Melville a well-earned point after its captain Matt Donlevy was sent off.

Both sides struggled to test the opposition goalkeeper in the first half, as their defences starved the strikers of chances.

The second half proved to be more of the same, with neither side able to force the keepers into a significant save.

But the game turned on its head when Donlevy was given a straight red card for a tackle from behind.

Melville found itself under pressure as the Roos looked to make their extra man count.

Kelmscott kept coming late and Curtis forced Daniel Agudelo into a superb save from close range on the cusp of full time.

But from the resulting corner, the ball fell to Curtis and with his back to goal, he twisted and volleyed into the top corner to snatch victory.
