Soccer: Melville City goalie’s heroics can’t keep side from suffering 3-1 defeat to Swan United

MELVILLE City lost its third game in a row after falling 3-1 to Swan United in their State League Division Two clash at the Italian Sporting Club.

New signing Shane Boyle gave Melville an early lead, but Mark Macallister equalised midway through the first half, before second-half goals to David Paone and John Monterosso sealed victory.

The visitors started promisingly and took the lead when Boyle controlled a loose ball before clinically dispatching his shot beyond Cory Hugo.

Swan worked its way back into the contest and levelled the scores just before the half-hour mark, when Macallister headed home Lyon Varney’s cross.

Macallister nearly had another soon after when he wriggled his way through the defence, only for Mirko Grgurinovic to pull off a fine save.

Swan was gifted a chance to take the lead when Macallister was upended in the box, but again Grgurinovic came to the rescue, beating away Domenic Ando’s penalty.

With 15 minutes left, it was Swan who capitalised when Paonemet scored from a corner.

City’s Graham Herd was sent off after dragging down Monterosso on a breakaway and the striker applied the coup de grâce soon afterwards on another counter-attack.

In response, Louie Granich was denied by the woodwork in injury time.
