Soccer: Murdoch University Melville FC claim important 3-1 win over Swan United

Ben SmithMelville Gazette

MURDOCH University Melville (MUM) FC have claimed a morale-boosting 3-1 victory over high-flying Swan United in their State League Division Two clash at Murdoch University.

A wonder strike from captain Dean Thurston and a late goal and assist by substitute Matt Sljivic gave the hosts a second win in a row.

The victory moved MUM FC into fourth spot at the halfway point, a position which would see them qualify for the end-of-season Division One promotion playoffs.

The home side started brightly and found the net early thanks to a sumptuous, dipping strike from Thurston, who found the net after he spotted the ‘keeper off his line and let fly from distance.

However, Swan levelled soon after when a communication breakdown between goalkeeper Alec Radonich and defender Broden Brown ended in the latter heading into his own net.

Radonich kept the scores level at half time with a nice double save from John Monterosso, while Tulie Mumbi hit the post for the home side.

After the break, Thurston had a goal ruled out for offside and Daniel Davey hit the woodwork twice, while Radonich was twice forced into fine saves by the dangerous Monterosso.

Amel Dzaferovic almost gave MUM FC the lead with a spectacular bicycle kick the ‘keeper did well to push over the bar, before Sljivic struck late with a composed lob which found the top corner.

The substitute then sealed the result with a fine dink which found fellow sub Simon El Chami, who volleyed home to seal the win.
