Soccer: Murdoch University Melville FC downs Curtin University 1-0

Ben SmithMelville Gazette

MURDOCH University Melville (MUM) FC made it two wins on the trot after claiming a 1-0 win over Curtin University FC in its State League Division 2 matchup at Edinburgh Oval.

Dean Thurston’s first half header was enough to separate the two sides and extend the visitor’s unbeaten run to three games.

MUM FC now finds itself in fourth spot after five games, with a game in hand over third-placed Balga.

In a game devoid of clear-cut chances, the away side looked more likely to take the lead, with Tulie Mumbi twice thwarted by good saves from the keeper.

In the shadows of half-time, MUM FC took the lead when Matt Sljivic chipped the ball across goal and Thurston nodded home from close range.

Curtin started the second half well and came close to equalising when a free kick was pushed just wide of the post by an attacker.

Reece Frank almost sealed the result late when his speculative volley from distance beat the goalkeeper, but was denied by the post.

The hosts almost pinched a draw late when Dilip Masrangi wriggled into the box, but Alec Radonich made a superb stop from close range to deny Curtin a share of the points.

MUM FC’s Reserve side made it three wins on the trot thanks to first half strikes from Nicholas Del Borrello and Liam Goerke in a 2-1 win over their Curtin counterparts, while the Under-18s won 7-2.
