Soccer: Murdoch University Melville FC fall 2-1 to Shamrock Rovers

Ben SmithMelville Gazette

MURDOCH University Melville (MUM) FC fell just short of a point despite a spirited second half as they went down 2-1 to Shamrock Rovers at Harold Rossiter Reserve.

Two goals inside the opening ten minutes sealed their fate, despite an improved second half showing.

The loss saw them drop to sixth on the ladder, albeit with a game in hand on the two teams above them, Balga and Quinns FC.

MUM FC were looking to build on their fine win over Swan United last time out, but two early Shamrock goals gave them a mountain to climb.

The visitors started the second half brightly and were rewarded when Dean Thurston fired home Aldaine Van Dyk’s inch-perfect cross.

Thurston loomed as the danger man as he twice forced Rovers’ ‘keeper into good saves, but it was not to be for MUM FC as they fell short of securing a point.

In other games, MUM FC’s Reserves won 5-1 thanks to braces from Declan Tanna and Liam Goerke plus a Simon El Chami strike, which the 18s triumphed 3-0.
