Soccer: Murdoch University Melville scores 2-0 win over Kelmscott Roos

Ben SmithMelville Gazette

MURDOCH University Melville (MUM) FC returned to the winner’s circle following a 2-0 win over Kelmscott Roos in its State League Division 2 clash at Frye Park.

After one point from its three previous games, MUM FC’s winless run looked like it may continue after a strong opening half from the hosts.

However, second half penalties to Dean Thurston and Simon El Chami gave MUM FC a vital three points as it moved to fifth spot on the ladder.

Buoyed by last week’s draw with top-of-the-table Olympic Kingsway, the visitors started brightly and Daniel Davey almost gave them the lead but put his shot over.

However, Kelmscott asserted itself and continuously provided MUM FC with problems on the counter attack and Juan Cabrera came closest to opening the scoring when his shot clipped the post.

The away side worked its way back into the match and was rewarded when Christian Long was felled in the box and Thurston converted the resultant penalty to give MUM FC the lead.

Despite some late Kelmscott pressure, including a Tait Comley strike that hit the crossbar, the visitors sealed the result when El Chami was fouled by goalkeeper Kristian Usedo on a counter-attack and he duly converted the penalty.
