Water polo: Applecross and Melville play out thrilling draw

THE South Fremantle Bloods and Triton are the standout men’s teams early in the Water Polo WA Premier League season while Applecross and the Melville Marlins played out an outstanding high-scoring draw on Saturday.

The second round of the new-look Premier League took place on Saturday with some terrific men’s and women’s action across the board.

The Fremantle conference matches took place at Bicton Pool with the North Coast Phoenix thumping Dolphins 16-2 and Applecross and Melville Marlins finishing all tied up at 15 goals each.

North Coast scored its first win of the season in emphatic fashion with the big win against Dolphins with Zoe Stenhouse scoring four goals, Casey Rushforth three, Gemma Hadley three, Claire Rechichi two and Zoe Rowcroft two.

The Applecross-Marlins was an outstanding display of water polo with both Melville teams featuring players that will make up the Fremantle Marlins team in the National Water Polo League in early 2017.

Applecross did lead 14-12 with five minutes remaining but the Marlins managed to score three of the last four goals to secure the draw.

Zoe Arancini scored six goals for the Marlins, Chloe Nella three, Erin Redbond two and Luci Marsh two.

Kelly Parks hit five goals for Applecross, Ebony Brown three, Lara Zimmerman two, Brooke Pensini two and Sofia Chaves two.

The lone women’s UWA conference match at HBF Stadium saw the UWA City Beach Blues defeat the Rangers 11-6. Ella Fracaro scored four goals for UWA City Beach while Holly Rose and Madi Rigo scored twice for Rangers.

Then in the men’s action, the Fremantle conference saw Dolphins defeat Port Colts 10-5 and South Fremantle Bloods beat Melville Sharks 9-5.

Dolphins scored their opening win of the season by beating the Sharks with Andras Jo-Kovacs scoring three goals, Peter Gaunt two and Jeremy Carbone two. Davis Verboon scored twice for Port Colts.

South Fremantle made it two from two to start the season with the four-goal win over the Sharks. The Bloods were led by four goals from Will McKay, two from Petar Tomasevic and two from Nick Elphick. Joel Swift scored three goals for Melville.

Triton remained undefeated with a big nine-goal victory against City Beach. It was a dominant performance by Triton led by UWA Torpedoes veterans Florian Naroska (seven goals) and Brett McGhie (four).

Rangers won their opening game of the season beating Flotsam in a contest between two UWA teams. Lach Pethick scored four times for Rangers and Tim Putt three with Taz Williams scoring three goals for Flotsam.
