Water polo: Fremantle and Melville face big weekend

Chris PikeMelville Gazette

A BIG weekend awaits Fremantle and Melville’s water polo teams, with the final round of the national league and grand final of the women’s Premier League approaching.

The Fremantle Marlins and Mariners travel to the UWA Aquatic Centre to take on the Torpedoes in the last round of the National Water Polo League.

The Marlins women scored two more wins over the Brisbane Barracudas at Bicton Pool at the weekend, starting with a 10-7 win on Friday night and backing that up with a 12-10 victory on Sunday.

They are guaranteed a finals appearance and will lock away second position with a win over the Torpedoes on Friday night in the derby.

The Mariners men’s team fell out of contention for a place in the finals with two defeats at the hands of Brisbane.

The Barracudas won 12-10 on Friday night and then 6-5 on Sunday.

That sees the Mariners slip to an 11-10 record on the season to be two games outside sixth spot with only the one match remaining against the Torpedoes on Friday.

UWA is the defending men’s champions but Fremantle would dearly love to interrupt its finals preparations.

Meanwhile, the Melville Marlins completed the 2016-17 season undefeated and then were untouchable in Saturday’s semi-final defeating the North Coast Phoenix 16-3.

They now advance to this Saturday afternoon’s grand final against the UWA City Beach Bears at HBF Stadium.
