Water polo: Melville Marlins complete undefeated season with grand final win over UWA City Beach

Chris PikeMelville Gazette

AFTER dominating all season, the Melville Marlins drove home its championship credentials in a resounding 15-2 grand final shellacking of UWA City Beach Bears at HBF Stadium on Saturday.

In a near re-match of the previous night’s National Water Polo League (NWPL) derby between Fremantle Marlins and the UWA Torpedoes it was a similar result.

Both sides boasted plenty of familiar faces and it was star Marlin and Rio Olympian Zoe Arancini who once again led the way with six goals.

Lauren Martin had four and Erin Redbond chipped in with three to secure the title following an undefeated season.

On Friday, the Fremantle Marlins dismantled Torpedoes 12-2 with Arancini and Madeleine Quinn scoring three goals each and Pia Rodgers adding two.

The result means Fremantle finish the NWPL season in second position with finals taking place this weekend in Sydney.

The men’s Fremantle Mariners faced a tough test against a UWA team gearing up for the finals in pursuit of back-to-back championships.

The Torpedoes appeared home leading 8-5 at three quarter-time but the Mariners hit the opening two goals of the fourth quarter to make things interesting.

It was all UWA from there though with the Torpedoes holding on for an 11-8 victory.

Nick Elphick scored three goals for the Mariners, James Fannon two and Tim Neesham two.
