THE Melville Sharks have moved to the top of the Water Polo WA Men’s Premier League following an emphatic 16-6 victory over the defending champion UWA City Beach Bears at HBF Stadium on Saturday.

The Sharks would eventually prove too strong for the Bears but only assumed control after quarter-time.

Scores were tied at 4-4 with 42 seconds remaining in the opening term before a late Melville goal on quarter-time from Clancy Neesham.

The Sharks then hit the only goal of the second quarter courtesy of Nick Elphick before scoring four goals to one in the third quarter, and another six to one in the fourth to run out commanding 16-6 winners.

Will Mackay ended up scoring five times for Melville while Elphick finished with three goals, as did Alex Petrov.

Saturday’s other men’s result saw Triton defeat Dolphins 5-4 at Beatty Park on the last goal of the game with just seconds remaining.

The weekend’s results leave Melville on top with a 4-2 record ahead of Triton (4-3), Dolphins (3-4) and UWA City Beach (2-4).

The Sharks take on Dolphins at Bicton Pool this Saturday from 3pm.

The Women’s Premier League got underway at the weekend as well but the defending champion Melville Marlins had a bye.

The Marlins begin their season against Phoenix at Beatty Park on Saturday at 4.30pm.
