Water Polo: Melville women retain top spot while mean prepare for grand final

Chris PikeMelville Gazette

BOTH Melville Water Polo WA Premier League teams had the weekend off but other results mean the women’s Marlins remain in top spot while the men’s Sharks are gearing up for the grand final.

Triton was unable to pull a team together for its fixture against the Sharks resulting in a forfeit to the Melville side.

The only men’s game to be played in Round 12 saw UWA City Beach Bears defeat the Dolphins 9-3 at HBF Stadium.

The grand final has been decided and will be played on Saturday at Bicton Pool between the Sharks and UWA City Beach.

The Bears are the defending men’s Premier League champions while the Melville team has reunited after it was split into the Sharks and Saints for 2015-16.

The grand final will feature the clear best teams in the competition with both boasting a host of National League players and Olympians from Rio.

One of those is Joel Swift who has returned to Melville after playing the past three seasons professionally in Hungary.

He has scored 14 times this season to be a key reason the Sharks finished in top spot and secured a home grand final.

Swift has enjoyed the return home and is looking forward to taking on the Bears.

“Of course, I am confident we can get the job done,” he said.

“They are a strong team with a lot of players from the UWA Torpedoes who won the Australian National league last season.

“It will be a great game but very confident the Melville team can get the job done.”
