THE Fremantle Mariners and Marlins are back from a successful four-game National Water Polo League (NWPL) trip to Adelaide and Melbourne with the men winning three and the women all of their contests.

The Marlins women began the tour in Melbourne against a Barbarians team set up by Water Polo Australia to replace the Victorian Seals who folded on the eve of the NWPL season.

On Thursday, the Marlins prevailed 13-6 over the Barbarians and then backed that up on Friday winning 12-6.

Then in Adelaide, the Marlins continued their winning form beating the Jets 19-5 on Saturday and 15-3 on Sunday.

That improves the Fremantle-based women to an 8-3 record on the season and second position on the table behind only the unbeaten Sydney University Lions who won last year’s premiership.

The Mariners men started the road trip with a 13-6 win over the Barbarians on Thursday before backing up with a 13-8 victory on Friday.

Then in Adelaide, Fremantle beat the Jets 11-8 on Saturday before going down narrowly 11-10 on Sunday.

The Mariners now hold a 5-6 record on the season to sit in seventh position.

Fremantle returns home for the next 10 games at Bicton Pool starting Friday against the Balmain Tigers.

Meanwhile in the Water Polo WA Premier League, Melville Marlins had a bye on the weekend with the women to resume this Saturday against North Coast Phoenix at Bicton Pool.

The Marlins currently sit clear on top of the table having won all of their contests in emphatic fashion.
