Fashion guru soaks up Melbourne Cup in Perth

Sally McGlewMidland Kalamunda Reporter

Normally in the Birdcage and asked to choose the best dressed fashions at the Melbourne Cup, Naidu decided a change of pace for Cup day in Perth this year would be exciting.

It also gave him an excuse to visit WA for the first time.

“It has been exciting to check out the Perth fashion scene and what is popular,” he said.

With impeccable fashion credentials, Naidu has previously worked with Vivienne Westwood, Katharine Hamnett and Helen Storey in the UK.

Naidu left London for Melbourne in the ’90s and has made numerous television appearances and provided commentary on fashion shows internationally.

Naidu attended the Western Australian Club’s first ever Melbourne Cup luncheon at the invitation of Perth eco-designer Zuhal Kuvan-Mills, and was impressed with the event.

“This is an absolutely beautiful venue and the food and wines from Western Australia are impeccable,” Naidu said.

The Club invited the Brigadoon based Kuvan-Mills to show her spring/summer collection from her Green Embassy label.

“The fashion aspect of this event has been exciting,” Naidu said.

“This collection by the designer has definitely got legs.”

Naidu said the Turkish-born Perth designer had embraced wonderful principles and ethics in her organic garments.

“This sustainable clothing is beautiful and her winter designs are also amazing using 100 per cent organic merino and alpaca, and silk.”

Kuvan-Mills’ spring/summer collection, called Rainforest, included 25 garments shown on the day.

The local designer said she was moving her workshops to Melbourne in 2016, where she said she had better access to the heart of the Australian fashion industry.

She was recently asked to supply garments to Selfridges in London and has shown her collections in China, New York, Birmingham, Vancouver, Paris and London fashion shows this year.

The Ellington Jazz Club in Northbridge will also show aspects of Rainforest in Northbridge on Sunday, December 13. Call 9228 1088 for more.
