‘To me personally, Anzac Day is a reminder that we should hold onto the Anzac spirit every day in our lives ” not just in times of war,’ the Kalamunda Senior High School student said.

Yesterday, Jessica (15) and her nine fellow WA youth ambassadors travelled to Malaysia for the tour.

For the next 10 days, students and staff will visit important historical sites in Sabah and Labuan and attend Anzac Day commemorations at Sandakan.

Jessica secured her place on the tour by writing an essay on the last WWI combat veteran Claude Choules.

‘I wanted to write about him because he symbolised all the stories that weren’t told,’ she said.

‘He was in the spotlight because he lived the longest, and it makes you think that there are so many untold stories making up the big picture of war.’

She said the trip would be something she would remember for the rest of her life.

‘I’m looking forward to seeing these places that I have been reading and studying about for so long.’
