Brothers run for their dad

While some like the fitness challenge of the run, or the chance to raise money for their favourite charity for the McGillivray brothers, their reason is personal.

Their father was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2008 and died within the year.

Matthew, from Helena Valley, said the family has a history of cancer battles but it was never brought to light until his dad’s fight.

‘The family history was never really spoken of but we feel that it is important to raise awareness about cancer,’ he said.

‘My brother and I are more conscious now about our health and get regular checks.’

Matthew said he was not daunted by the 12km course.

‘I like to keep fit and although I have not done anything specific to prepare or train, hockey season keeps me fit,’ he said.

‘I also like to run regularly too.’
