THE former Handi Hardware building on Lloyd Street in Midland will open as a Zambrero drive-through restaurant tomorrow, giving away 1000 free burritos in the process.

It will be the 100th Zambrero store to open in Australia and the 23rd to open in WA.

Staff will dish out the 1000 free burritos from 12pm onwards.

It took the just three hours to give away 1000 free burritos when the Fremantle Zambrero opened — that’s a burrito every 11 seconds.

During construction of the restaurant, builders uncovered historical terrazzo tiles from the original stoneworks, which have been preserved above the building’s entrance.

Zambrero’s WA area manager Gordon Bain said the find was a significant discovery, which they were happy to preserve.

“We kept the old tiles above the entrance because an area’s past is important to preserve,” he said.
