Sally McGlewMidland Kalamunda Reporter

Previously a fire inspector, Julian Cole has taken up the appointment after a long-term involvement with fire safety.

Chief executive Rhonda Hardy said the shire invested considerable time and resources in informing and educating the community on how to best prepare for a bushfire, understanding the DFES warning system, what to have in their emergency survival kit, planning for pets, what to expect at evacuation centres and what their bushfire plans should involve.

"We welcome Julian to the team. His considerable knowledge and experience will further assist to ensure our residents are well equipped to face the ever-present threat of bushfires," Ms Hardy said.

The role involves working with the shire and the community to help promote a working involvement with the residents in how to apply bushfire awareness, building protection zones to their properties, working with the firebreak notices and dealing with inquiries on bushfire and safety matters.

The Shire of Kalamunda completed its Bushfire Hazard Mapping in 2014 and the council introduced a Special Control Area for Bushfire Prone Areas.

As part of this process, the shire worked closely with DFES in order to align the amendment consistent with the proposed draft SPP 3.7 and new revised risk management guidelines.
