SWAN Mayor David Lucas is recovering at home after he was assaulted at Midland Town Hall last night.

Cr Lucas suffered head injuries after he was allegedly hit in the head with a microphone by a 67-year-old man at a special electors meeting.

He was taken to St John of God Midland Public Hospital for treatment to a small laceration on his head and a knee injury, which occurred during a scuffle.

Swan chief executive Mike Foley said Cr Lucas would need further medical attention in due course.

“Last night’s meeting was a respectful event, where community members shared their concerns about the Midland Oval Redevelopment with the City of Swan council,” he said.

“The incident only occurred after meeting had closed.

“The Mayor would like to thank the community for their concerns and I ask you respect his privacy at this time.”

More than 200 people witnessed the alleged assault on Cr Lucas.

Residents and ratepayers met at Midland Town Hall to discuss plans for Midland Oval and the need for more public open space.

The man was charged with assaulting a person performing a public function and unlawful damage.

He is due to appear in Midland Magistrates Court on July 10.
