Clayton View Primary makes fitness important part of curriculum

SCHOOL fitness has become an important part of the curriculum at Clayton View Primary School in Koongamia.

Principal Sharon Marchenko said the school has been working with the St George Foundation and Sports Challenge Australia to make physical activity a priority.

St George Foundation Chief Executive Garry Tester said the school wanted to emphasis cardio exercise and flexibility for students.

He said only one in 10 primary schools in Australia had a trained PE specialist and it is time to improve the physical health of children.

“With growing obesity levels and Type 2 diabetes in primary school children, this initiative will make a real difference.”

“We believe these skills will flow into the home and community to help build a positive healthy culture for the future,” Mrs Marchenko said.

The school ran a pilot program for the fitness challenge last year and Mrs Marchenko said it would be interesting to compare the health results after one year in the new program.

The students will be participating in two 15-minute sessions each week.
