Cops earn bravery awards

Two officers from Kiara ” Constable Jason King and Jess Curly ” along with two from Ellenbrook ” Constable Dean Tapper and Probationary Officer Ryan Livesey” along with Constable Emma Wright and Acting Sergeant David White, from Midland traffic, and Constable Shane Osborne from Midland Police complex, attended a meritorious service award presentation with Inspector Wayne Hawes and Superintendent Kim Massam for the Eastern Region.

Snr-Sergeant Grant Strahan said all the officers could have placed themselves in serious danger during the operation to save the helicopter pilot and Channel 10 cameraman when it crashed at Weir Road, Baskerville on Saturday, January 19 at 10am.

The TV crew was filming an accident with a truck, which had crashed on the Great Northern Highway.

Snr-Sergeant Strahan said Constable Wright could have been cut in half by the chopper’s spinning blades as they hit a log and sliced the fence near where she was standing.

He said the pilot was unable to stop the blades turning but the officers attending were able to secure the site and reduce the safety risks.

Once fire officers attended, they sprayed fire retardant on the aviation fuel.
