Federal Government commits to $117 million for frontline services addressing homelessness

THE Federal Government has said it will deliver $117.2 million to support frontline services addressing homelessness.

About 85,000 people, particularly women and children affected by domestic violence and vulnerable young people, will be supported through 757 new services announced in the Transitional National Partnership Agreement on Homelessness (NPAH).

Federal Hasluck MHR, Ken Wyatt said the Government announced the decision before the May budget to give service providers more certainty as they help Australia’s most vulnerable.

Mr Wyatt said, “We all have a responsibility to look after those who are most vulnerable and by working together we can make a real difference to the lives of those who are doing it tough.”

“I am pleased the Federal Government has taken the lead.”

Last November Mr Wyatt said ministers agreed to progress the reform on Housing and Homelessness and reinvigorate the policies and funding arrangements for them.

In December, state and territory treasurers discussed options to improve housing supply and affordability.

One suggestion was to establish a taskforce to examine options for a bond aggregator to assist in providing more housing options.

“It has become increasingly clear that there is an urgent need for reforming both the affordable housing and homelessness sectors,” Mr Wyatt said.

“We are calling on the states and territories to match the federal commitment to help under the Transitional NPAH and… reduce the alarming rise in homelessness.”

Mr Wyatt said the Transitional NPAH would prioritise funding to services providing support to women and children experiencing domestic or family violence and youth.
