Firefighters battling out of control bushfire in Hazelmere

FIREFIGHTERS are battling a bush fire that is burning out of control towards the Old Midland Railway Workshops in Hazelmere.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services has issued a bushfire advice for the area bounded by Yelverton Drive and Clayton Street to the north, Military Road to the east, Bushmead Road and Stirling Crescent to the south and Amherst Road to the west in the suburbs of Hazelmere, Midland and Bellevue.

About 70 career, volunteer Fire and Rescue Service, Bush Fire Service firefighters are attending. Aerial support has been sent to assist ground crews.

Some roads may be closed. Motorists are asked to avoid the area, reduce speed and drive carefully due to smoke.

The fire was reported just after 1pm today. It started near the intersection of Stirling Crescent and Bushmead Road in Hazelmere.
