McDonald’s lodges SAT appeal over JDAP rejection of Guildford restaurant

RESIDENTS campaigning against plans by McDonald’s to build a 24-hour restaurant in Guildford are up for another super-sized fight with the fast food giant lodging an appeal with the State Administrative Tribunal (SAT).

Last month the Metro East Joint Development Panel (JDAP) refused McDonald’s development application on the grounds it would have an adverse impact on the heritage values of Guildford as well as concerns over traffic, parking and the restaurant’s proximity to the local primary school.

Say No To McDonald’s spokeswoman Claire Scanlan said McDonald’s were “mad” to appeal.

“We always knew it was a possibility that McDonald’s would appeal,” she said.

“But given they were absolutely slaughtered by the panel at the JDAP hearing we thought they would be mad to appeal.

“We know we have strong grounds for opposition and we are hopeful these issues are continued to be represented effectively.”

Mrs Scanlan was hopeful the progression of Guildford to be state heritage listed would strengthen the group’s argument.

City of Swan Mayor Mick Wainwright said the decision was disappointing.

“While McDonald’s has the right to appeal, it is disappointing to hear they will be pursuing one despite strong opposition from the community and the City’s original advice against the proposal,” he said.

A McDonald’s spokeswoman said the company said it would continue to work with the local community and the City of Swan as it progressed its application.

“This site is zoned for commercial use and we strongly believe we meet all of the relevant planning requirements consistent with this site,” she said.

“All we are asking is that our development application is considered on its merit.

“If approved this restaurant will provide more than 100 local jobs and will also bring a number of other economic benefits to the local area.”
