Midland MLA Michelle Roberts calls on State Govt to grant Guildford interim heritage listing

GUILDFORD should be granted interim heritage listing as a matter of urgency to prevent a flood of planning applications says Midland MLA Michelle Roberts.

Mrs Roberts has written to Local Government Minister David Templeman saying it was time for certainty and recognition for the historic town site.

“Continued speculation about Guildford’s potential listing could lead to a flood of planning applications from those wishing to get approvals in place ahead of any listing,” she said.

“The community has lobbied against undesirable applications such as McDonald’s in the past.”

Mrs Roberts said residents were keen to protect WA’s first town of settlement.

“I understand there has been a very high response rate to the City of Swan’s survey with 89 per cent in favour of heritage listing Guildford,” she said.

“They believe heritage listing would recognise the town’s significance in the colonial settlement of our state, increase the town’s marketing potential and mitigate against inappropriate development applications for high rise buildings.”

Mr Templeman was contacted for comment.
