‘Parents or carers must attend the 10-week courses. It’s not something where parents drop off their kids; parents need to be involved because this is a family-based program,’ Ms Robertson said.

Health professionals, including dieticians and psychologists, spend time talking to parents while their children take part in non-traditional physical games specifically designed to encourage participation and boost self-esteem, as part of the program.

The privately-run Better Health Program started in four Perth suburbs last month, including Midvale, and will be rolled out to more locations over the next 2
