GRAEME Wallis, of Sorrento, has been recognised for his significant service to the mining sector.

The managing director of family company Wallis Drilling in Midvale was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia.

“I am very pleased but it was a bit of a shock,” he said of the honour.

His list of achievements point to his support of industry associations and focus on safety and training, and includes:

• Mineral Drillers Association of Australia – founding member, past president and life member.

• Drillskill – founding member.

• Australian Drilling Industry Association – life member, past director.

• Engineering Automotive Training Council – board member.

“A well-skilled worker does not have an accident,” he said. “Teach them how to do a job properly and then they can see the risks.

“An ignorant person can’t see the dangers.”

Honour for former Wildcats star

Mr Wallis was honoured with inclusion in the Swan Chamber of Commerce’s Walk of Fame in 2014 and represented the mineral drilling industry on Central Tafe’s board.
