Residents save park from being sold

Joel KellyMidland Kalamunda Reporter

THE Defence Department has put an immediate hold on the sale of Waterhall Park in South Guildford following a swift community campaign.

Last week, the 1.5-hectare park with "development potential" appeared on a real estate website on behalf of the Department of Defence.

Locals promptly formed the Save Waterhall Park group and contacted local federal member Ken Wyatt and the City of Swan to explain the issue.

Mr Wyatt said he met with Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Defence Darren Chester today.

"(He) agreed to immediately suspend the sale process for three months to allow time for further investigation and community consultation," Mr Wyatt said.

"In that time, I will be seeking a meeting with City of Swan Council and interested members of the community regarding the future use of the site and I obtained a commitment from (Mr Chester) to visit and meet with the relevant parties.

"It is my strong view that the site should be retained for community use and I will work with local residents and the Federal Government to achieve the best possible outcome for my electorate."
